Welcome to the second block for Mathematics for Foundation Phase Teachers III. Because of the current State of Disaster as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic in place at the start of this course and the University’s decision not to commence with face-to-face teaching, this course has been planned to be delivered remotely. Your course for Term 2 will NOT be exactly the same as your normal, face-to-face courses as we have to try and work with the constraints under which you and all of us teaching the course are currently experiencing. Research shows that students work much more slowly when they work online, and that they cope with much less content so we have taken that into consideration. This way of working does offer all of us opportunities and challenges to do things in different ways – both in terms of teaching and learning. It will also bring some anxieties for all of us that we will try and work with. In order to try and manage these challenges as best we all can we need to work carefully with how we all communicate and to be clear about basic information about what needs to be done, how and when. We’ve explained this in detail in the rest of this course outline so it is important that you read it carefully before the course begins so we can keep the direct communication channels we do have open for responding to questions related to the course content and learning difficulties people are experiencing. Take note of the following: During the semester and as you go through this course you are expected to submit responses to tutorials each week. This tutorial response must then be forwarded to the tutorial leader concerned (Look for their names on the Course Planning Outline to know who to send to) who will give the group feedback. Assignment 1 due date is 26 March 2021 and Assignment 2 due date is 21 May 2021. Assignment 3 due date is 8 October 2021 Please submit your assignment on Ulwazi Canvas Your final assessment will be a Final exam in November and hopefully we will be back to our normal lecture mode at Wits before that. Information will be communicated to you once more information is forthcoming. As lecturers we share your concerns and wish to provide you with some guidance on how to get through the lockdown, Online Teaching, Blended learning and maintain some structure in your studies We are going to use the Ulwazi Platform (CANVAS) where we will share all your notes, power point slides, assignments, tutorials and credit tasks. You can begin working synchronously and asynchronously. A course pack with Readings will be made available to you. The Modules icon on the left menu of the Home button will provide you with the content by units, weeks and topics. Click the Modules button to help you get started.
