The following diagram shows the professions we have explored in vertical columns and the skills that they need as a horizontal band of colour. Generally, the professions require the same skills, although urban planners do not need to visualise three-dimensional space, and this is not as essential for urban designers as for architects. Differences in emphasis are shown in the bottom two rows, shifting from the big picture for planners to detail for interior architects, and from a concern for people’s empowerment for planners to the technical realisation of designs for architects.
